Stain first aid: what to do in the first five minutes
Every stain has a golden window, and it’s shorter than you think. What you do in the first five minutes often decides whether a mark comes out completely or becomes a permanent memory.
Rule one: blot, never rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fibers and can roughen the fabric’s surface. Use a clean white cloth or napkin and press gently, working from the outside of the stain toward the center.
Rule two: skip the home remedies. Club soda, hairspray, and dish soap all have their legends, but on silk, wool, or anything structured they can set the stain or leave a ring that’s harder to remove than the original spill.
Rule three: tell us what it was. When you bring the garment in, a quick note — “red wine, last night” or “olive oil, this morning” — lets us choose the right treatment immediately instead of guessing.
And don’t wait. A stain that sits for weeks oxidizes and bonds with the fabric. Bring it in within a few days, and the odds of a perfect result go way up.
